In a report done by the Patriot News, Governor Rendell said he is optimistic but not confident that a Marcellus Shale severance tax will be enacted by the end of this legislative session. There are 21 session dates scheduled so far before the session ends at the end of the year. However task forces comprised of top legislative staffers, environmental groups and gas industry representatives have been working for the past few months to draft legislation for consideration as soon as session reconvenes. In this fiscal year's budget there was a written commitment that both chambers would work to get a deal in place.
The House returns to session on Monday and the Senate on the 20th.
State To Have Assistance For Early Retiree Health Care
Yesterday Governor Rendell announced that the Commonwealth, along with 102 other employers across the state, has been accepted into the federal Early Retiree Reinsurance Program. This program will provide money to employers to help employees who retire early but are not yet eligible for Medicare. This will help ease the cost to those employers that pay for health care for early retirees before their Medicare kicks in.
