Obama Visits Bucks County
This week President Obama visited Bucks County to host a town hall-style meeting at Gamesa Technology Corp. in Fairless Hills. In attendance were mostly employees of Gamesa and elected officials and they discussed clean energy with the President reiterating his administration’s devotion to renewable energy sources and how it can stimulate the economy and job growth. The issue of Marcellus Shale drilling was raised and while he agrees natural gas is cleaner to use than coal, the extraction process must be continually studied to make sure it is environmentally safe.
Proposal to Cut Prison Costs
Senators Stewart Greenleaf (R- Montgomery) and Jay Costa (D-Allegheny) joined Auditor General Jack Wagner (D) in Pittsburgh this week to discuss ways to cut the state's corrections department spending. Wagner said that almost 40% of state prisoners are nonviolent offenders and should be less of a burden on state prison expenses by overhauling sentencing practices. Senator Greenleaf introduced a bill, SB 100, that would do just that through lessening prison time and encouraging rehabilitation programs through non profits and faith-based groups.Wagner states that Greenleaf's proposal could cut prison costs $50 million this year and up to $100 million in subsequent years.
