Congressman Bob Brady to retire

This week Congressman Bob Brady announced he will not seek another term. Brady has served the 1st District since 1998. Brady has long served as chair of Philadelphia’s Democratic Committee but was reportedly facing strong opposition in the primary this year. He cited concerns over redistricting and wanting to spend time with his family for his retirement.  In addition to Brady, five other Congressional House members are not seeking re-election this year.

State Democratic Party Chair steps down

Marcel Groen, chair of the state Democratic Party has resigned. Groen released a letter this morning detailing his departure. He said was asked to step down by Gov. Wolf and has “always believed that the Commonwealth’s Chief Executive should have final say” on the state party chair. He noted that because of comments he recently made, in an interview, regarding sexual harassment allegations in the Democratic Party, he would step down. He stated that he did want to be a distraction, though he disagreed with Gov. Wolf’s assessment. He accepted responsibility for his comments but said he felt they were taken out of context and that he had done nothing wrong.

Punxsutawney Phil: 6 more weeks of winter

Pennsylvania’s most famous groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, emerged from his stump and saw his shadow this morning. Thus, Phil predicts six more weeks of winter. Phil lives at the Punxsutawney Library most of the year and travels to Gobbler’s Knob to make his prediction each year.
